On AI

By Dominic S.

Here’s a question that many people think about: what do humans have that AI doesn’t? Well, in this article I’ll do my best to answer this question. But first I want to tell you a story; in 2022, I was in Tucson, Arizona with my family when we decided to watch a movie. What movie would we watch? Well, after some careful consideration, we found a Netflix web browser, Gemini, that told us exactly what shows to watch. And we did ask Gemini (an AI chatbot). Not exactly proud of that. But AI utilized many different shows on Netflix and matched them up with our requests like a game of Bingo.

After two seconds of typing a prompt, AI popped in saying,” How fun! A family movie night! Here are some family-friendly movies you might want to see.” Uhmmmm, thanks for patronizing me? After being what seems like kindly forced by AI to choose a movie called The Mitchells vs. the Machines, we watched it. It was a marvel of cinematography with little cute puppies and rainbows edited into the side of the screen. Great show, but that’s not the point of the article. Near the end of the movie, the-sorta-villain was asked by an AI plot character, ”What do humans have that AI doesn’t?”

After that I spent a moment trying to think. That question was actually a hard one. The guy faced with the question answered with “The power of love.” AI was not impressed. It turned itself into sleep mode. Anyway, that’s not the point.

The point is, what do we have that AI doesn’t? So here’s my answer: creativity. AI can’t create things in its own mind the way humans can. It can’t just go to sleep and magically have dreams that can be generated to almost perfection. You usually know/have seen the person (in your dream) to make your dream look incredibly realistic. You can create a storyline as you go along. AI can’t make a storyline while the video progresses. That’s one thing AI can’t replicate, but it’s not the last.

AI can create short stories. We all know that. What AI can’t do is create a unique intriguing plotline full of twists and turns. What AI does is this: it essentially copies other books because AI can’t be inspired, unlike humans. And it reads them in one second, and uses help from the plot lines and writer’s perspective, and almost copies and pastes onto its writing pad, changing just a few things, shortening it to only three pages at the most, and sends it out. It’s a very generic average storyline that AI spiced up by adding some longer words to try to impress humans. The plot only sounds better because it sounds more sophisticated. AI just intensifies the already uniquely deep storyline that feels like you’re in it and just increases that sense until it’s too much.

AI can’t create wonders like J.K Rowling or any famous other authors. Humans have what almost feels like a magic touch when it comes to writing. Humans just shouldn’t use AI for massive writing prompts. If you know what you want, then write about it on… what was it??? Oh right! Only three years ago you would open Google Docs or whatever writing area you can find, whether it’s Canva or a sticky note. People always say AI will be the downfall of us, so if it is, just stick to your own writing. It’s pretty obvious you used AI even if you take out the “big kid words.” Oceans are being drained because of our actions, so put down your screen and enjoy the outside world.
