Flexible Classrooms

Our classrooms are designed to facilitate collaboration and learning. Whether standing up or tilting side to side, boys are better able to concentrate when they can move. When the weather is nice, classes can even move outdoors.

A Unique History

The history of the Seven Hills buildings began in 1927, long before Seven Hills School was formed. The 1920s were a period of rapid industrial growth in Richmond, Virginia. Need for utilities such as gas, water, and electricity was booming and the public utility company decided to consolidate operations into one site at 1311 Overbrook Road (then referred to as Howard Street) in order to efficiently manage growth.

In addition, our central location allows us to use the city as an extension of our campus. From the river to numerous museums, our students experience the best the city has to offer.

Campus Details

Building A

Building A has two classroom spaces, which host the majority of classes for the Bridge program. This building features garage-style doors that allow for an open-air classroom experience on nice days. Building A also holds the teacher workroom.

Building B

The second floor of Building B includes the school’s library, a meeting room, and faculty and staff offices. The lower level is home to more classroom spaces, including the art studio and photography darkroom.

Building C

In Building C you'll find our main office, the Head's office, several classrooms, a large science lab, and the Great Hall. It’s where most classes occur and where our community gathers most often.

Building D

Building D houses the Admissions Office on the ground floor and an additional meeting space on the second floor. The exterior of Building D features a large and colorful mural by Richmond artist Ed Trask. The mural depicts some of the important historical figures - Maggie Walker, James Baldwin, Frederick Douglass, W.E.B Du Bois, Oliver Hill, Langston Hughes, Spotswood Robinson - associated with Frederick Douglass Court, the neighborhood in which Seven Hills resides.

Outdoor Space

All Seven Hills students spend at least an hour outside every day, so our outdoor space is just as important as the buildings. The campus features a soccer field of competition-quality natural turf, large multi-court blacktop, fire pit, and stone walkways.

Great Hall

The Great Hall is the heart of the Seven Hills campus. Housed in Building C, it is where our community gathers twice a day for Opening and Closing Meeting. It is where most House Competitions take place and where we host the majority of community events.

We rent out the Great Hall for private events! Learn more here.

Phoenix Garden

The Phoenix Garden is a large, active garden that is maintained largely by students under the supervision of a resident farmer. The garden grows a wide variety of produce from tomatoes and eggplants to watermelon and peppers, as well as numerous herbs and flowers.

Tuck Shop & Woodshop

Across the soccer field you'll find the Tuck Shop and Woodshop. The Tuck Shop is our version of a cafeteria. Parent volunteers man the shop every day and serve hot lunch as well as a variety of snacks and beverages. The Woodshop is a large space that is highly utilized for Exploratories such as woodworking and firebuilding.

The James River & City of Richmond

Because of our proximity to the James River and downtown Richmond, our "campus" is limitless! We leverage this proximity every month for our River Days and frequently for various field trips around the city.
