Tell us about what you’re doing professionally these days.
I’m a writer, filmmaker, photographer and founder of Shanks Studio, a new production company. I was recently named a fellow by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
My photo collection “Love Letters to America” and second film “Never Again” are on display at the Richmond Art Garage until October 31. The photography and film chronicle social justice movements over a span of nearly seven years, and document the dramatic removal of Confederate monuments in Richmond.
What skills or knowledge did you learn at Seven Hills that has helped you along the way?
Seven Hills taught me that I could choose my own path, and that I didn’t have to conform.
What is your favorite memory from Seven Hills?
Definitely camping at Spider Island. That was incredible.
What advice would you give to today’s Seven Hills boys?
Always be open to good advice.
